ARMY TAKING OVER
PLANE FERRY SERVICE U.S. TO MIDDLE EAST (10.30) WASHINGTON, Oct. 5. The United States Army plans to take over the plane ferrying service from the United States to the Middle East on November 1, after the expiration of the contract of Pan-American Airways Corporation, which has been carrying on the work with civilian pilots. Officials stated that Pan-American Airways had pioneered the routes and had done a brilliant job, but the army had long been preparing to use military crews for the ferry service to combat zones. All planes destined for their own air forces as well as lease-or-lend craft will be handled by the army. Many of the Pan-American Airways civilian ferry pilots are expected to accept commissions and continue the service.
