AUSTRALIAN RICE
SUPPLIES FOR PUBLIC SUSPENDED TEMPORARILY (Special Australian Correspondent.) (1 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 12. Supplies of rice for the Australian population have been suspended temporarily. The step has been taken because the native populations of the pacific islands how depend upon Australian rice for their existence, and Australia has accepted the responsibility of feeding them. Australian and New Zealand services also have to be supplied. The consumption of rice by the natives of Fiji, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia and other Fighting French islands of the Pacific is stated to be 81b, per head per week. Plans are in train to expand the Australian rice-growing industry.
