WELLINGTON, this): day/ The recent arrangement between', the principal parties in the House of Representatives War Administration was under fire at the annual conference of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union yesterday. A few speakers favoured it being given a trial before comment was offered. The majority were critical, feeling that it did not meeUthe desire of the people for a National Government. Captain H. M. Rushworth, Bay of Islands, said a National Government could have been formed and' g6pe to the country. This would have eliminated the strife of party elections and resulted in individual competition among .the type of men Who would have come forward updei such conditions .to assist the country. ■: Two resolutions were unanimously adopted by the conference aS follows: “That in view of the recent rearrangement of the War Cabinet, 1 tnis conference awaits results before offering comment. Nevertheless, ( it wishes to record its approval of the following remit of the Dominianexecutive as setting out its- opinion-lof the best method under which a tfUly national leadership could be obtained: ‘That this conference urges the (formation of a National Government -jn order to secure the most energetic prosecution of the war in both “file military and economic spheres. -By a National Government, is meant ah Administration composed of men selected solely for their ability to do their particular job and selected re-: gardless of party, class or section, but without an unnecessary departure from constitutional practice.’ ” This was proposed by Mr. A. Briscoe-Moore, Whangarei, Dominion vice-president. The second resolution put forward ■ by Captain Rushworth was: ‘‘That, this conference of portion of .the common people of New Zealand protests „ against the prolongation of the, life of the present Parliament and insists on the necessity for preserving all the rights and duties of the ■ common people to control Parliament by means of an election or otherwise to 1 be held at the time laid down by the Statutes prior to the last general election.” . ; , Mr. C. C. Munro, Auckland, .Was elected a life member of the union. Notice of motion was given for the 1943 conference proposing Mr. E. 'H. Murney, Tapanui, Otago, as a -life member.
