GLOWING TRIBUTE

NEW ZEALAND WOMEN COURAGE & GENEROSITY *GEN. HURLEY’S EULOGY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. A glowing tribute to the women of New Zealand for their fortitude amid the tragedies of war was paid by Brigadier-General Patrick J. Hurley, United States Minister to New Zealand, at the opening of a new club for servicemen and women in Manners street. He also eulogised New Zealand’s contribution to the effort of the United Nations and the gallantry and devotion to duty of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Every day he read the New Zealand roll of honour and he often thought how New Zealand mothers must be enduring quietly, silently and patiently. He thought, too, of the valour and spirit with which the New Zealanders attacked the enemy with the bayonet the other night, the next, and the day following. Now to-day they were reading the roll of honour. Behind the men who had fallen was the character of New Zealand in this war. As in other wars, New Zealand had never shirked. New Zealand had always contributed more than her portion, She was doing so to-day. “My heart to-day is with those New Zealanders who are meeting the enemy in battle and with the mothers, wives, sweethearts, and sisters they have left at home, continued Briga-dier-General Hurley. “He hoped the Americans might emulate the courage, generosity and fighting spirit of the New Zealanders. Later the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, thanked BrigadierGeneral Hurley for his generous acknowledgment of the contribution made by New Zealand. “BrigadierGeneral Hurley’s words must hrfve reached the hearts of everyone present," he said. “They carried with ,them the true spirit in which all the country’s have been initiated and carried on."
