VISIT TO AMERICA

IMPRESSIONS GAINED SYDNEY. June 25. Impressions gained by Mrs. Evatt. wife of Dr. H. V. Evatt, .the Minister of External Affairs in Australia, were given by her on her return with her husband from a visit to America. Social study groups found Australia their chief topic, she said. Libraries were inundated with requests for books about Australia, and high school girls besieged the Australian Legation for information. Washington was much impressed with Sydney’s “bagging” of the submarines in the harbour. Americans were now extremely interested in A.R.P., said Mrs. Evatt. Sugar rationing in the United States was now reduced to a week. “It you are asked to a party you are almost expected .to bring your sugar supplies with you.” she said, lyThe highlight of her tour was luncheon with Mrs. Roosevelt at the White House. "Mrs. Roosevelt is a charming and able woman and a personality in her own right,” said Mrs. Evatt. "She was particularly interested in the labour conditions in Australia and was glad to hear thnl the war had not lowered wages.” The outstanding woman, in America other than Mrs. Roosevelt is, in Mrs. Evatt’s opinion, Mrs. Ovetta Culp Hobby, the leader of .the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps, a voluntary organisation which is in charge of women’s services.
