ROYALTY CRITICISED

SUGGESTED COMMANDER PROPOSAL RIDICULED (10 a.m.) LONDON, July 2. During the no-confidence debate in the House of Commons, Mr. J. McGovern (Ind. Lab.) described the suggestion that the Duke of Gloucester should be appointed commander-in-chief was the product of an infantile mentality. It was true that the Duke of Gloucester may have had more toy soldiers in his youth than the average child and may have displayed certain abilities. He was wearing medals for battles he never fought in. Mr. M. Petherick (Con.) protested, asking: “Is it in order to discuss Royalties in this House?” Mr. McGovern: If you are going to suggest that they should be comman-ders-in-chief, I am going to discuss them. The deputy Speaker intervened, saying it would be a great mistake to pursue the subject. Mr. McGovern: I have no intention of doing so, but Sir John WardlawMilne might as well have suggested that the Home Secretary should command, or Vic Oliver.
