A Sword Swallower? A surprising amount of digestive ability was recently displayed in Christchurch by a girl of three. While playing in a shed she swallowed a large ball-bearing, a nail over an inch long, and a large tack. Her anxious parents rushed her to the hospital, fearing the worst, but no serious complications resulted. 200 Homeless Children A request was received by Mr. W. H. Paul, chairman of the Waikato Children’s Camp League, that the league provide accommodation at its camp at Port Waikato for 200 Masterton children who have been rendered homeless by the recent earthquake. Mr. Paul ' immediately telegraphed offering the accommodation. Waioeka Gorge Blocked A blockage occurred on the Waioeka Gorge road last night, when a tree fell across the road near Oponae, while there was also a slip not far away. Arrangements were made for an early cutting, of a track through the slip, after the removal of the tree, and the mail truck from the north which should have reached Gisborne early this morning was due here at 4 p.m. Vegetables in Army Diet The opinion that men in the army were receiving on an average more vegetables than they had had in their diet in civil life was expressed by witnesses before the Christchurch City Council vegetable committee. “The army has set itself out to treat the men well in the supply of healthgiving vegetables,” said Mr. D. M. Park, a witness on behalf of produce brokers. Oral Examinations In order to save paper, a different technique was being adopted with the half-yearly : examinations, and teachers would use as much “viva voce” examination as the subject permitted, reported the director of the Wellington Technical College, Mr. R. Acclimatisation Society At the annual meeting of .the East Coast Acclimatisation Society, the president, Mr. F. W. Jackson in the Hastings Joultry Show on June 26 and 27 are as follows: —Black Orpington, Utility, two firsts and one second prize; Black Orpington, cockerel, North Island championship,' Wattie Rose Bowl for Best Utility Orpington, Y. C. Thornton Jubilee Cup for the Best Young Bird in the Show, North Island Poultry Board Cup for the Best Utility Orpington, G. Woods Cup for the Best Utility Bird in the Show, a special prize for Best Utility. Bird in the Show, and a special prize tor the best Black Orpington. Bird Seed as Evidence Bird seed found in a young man’s shoe, some more picked up from the floor of a car, and a sample from 561 b. of mixed bird seed that had been tipped on ,the floor of a Kelburn grocery shop that had been broken into, were put in as evidence against Brian Desmond Larson, aged 20, a labourer, Neville Raymond Austin, aged 19, labourer, and George Willihm Hardy, aged 19, labourer, who pleaded guilty in Wellington to breaking and entering the shop of John Franklin Hunt, Raroa road, Kelburn, on June 6. They stole between £lO and £l2 in cash, and about £9O worth of goods. They were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
