RANGOON BOMBED
AMERICAN RAIDERS FIGHTING IN BURMA (11 a.m.) LONDON, April 19. A communique from United States air force headquarters in New Delhi states that a squadron of heavy bombers raided Rangoon on Thursday night. The docks and harbour installations were heavily bombed. No damage or casualties were suffered by the raiders though intense anti-aircraft fire was encountered. It is authoritatively stated that British forces are definitely not withdrawing from Burma. The main Chinese forces on the Sittang River front in central Burma have withdrawn to a new line after many days’ powerful offensive by overwhelming Japanese forces. The Chinese High Command announced that many Japanese were left dead on the battlefield on April 14 when the Chinese halted one enemy thrust in Burma 16 miles south of Loikaw. A second enemy column pressing on towards Loikaw from Toungoo is still being held up in the Yado sector, about 40 miles southwest of Loikaw. Severe fighting raged throughout Wednesday in Yani sector of the Sittang River. The Chinese troops, fighting most desperately and gallantly, inflicted more than 1000 casualties.
