AUSTRALIAN SPENDING (11 a.m.) CANBERRA, April 19. Australia will spend £400,000,000 in the year .ending June 30, according to an announcement by the Treasurer, Mr. Chiefly, appealing in a broadcast for an intensified savings campaign. “This is four times more than peacetime spending and the burden will grow as the job grows harder,” he said. “More men and women are employed generally and earning higher wages than ever before, but it will be stupid folly to go on spending the incomes.” Mr. Chiefly said that everyone was contributing to the Government by taxation and savings, but it was necessary to greatly increase the contributions and to reduce the living standard to the barest essentials.
