Importance of Penang

The importance of Penang was emphasised recently by Mr. G. R. Evans, who for the past 14 years had been assistant engineer to the municipality of Penang and was now in Wellington. In this Malayan island, one-quarter of the world’s tin supply is smelted, the. mainland of Malaya producing another quarter. Penpng is four'miles from the mainland, and its harbour, accommodating large vessels on the Eastern trade routes, is on that side. It was fortified and garrisoned. The population of the island is 180,000, of whom 1000 are white, mainly British.’ There are a few hundred Japanese in business there as photographers, dry-cleaners and general shopkeeoers.
