SCHOOL CALF CLUBS

ANNUAL PARADES

JUDGES' HIGH PRAISE

The school agricultural clubs on the Gisborne, Wniroa and East Coast districts are holding their annual displays, and some excellent exhibitions of stock have been brought forward. NUHAKA NATIVE SCHOOL The Nuhaka Native and Public Schools held their annual calf club display last Friday, parents and friends attending in large numbers. At the Native School 17 calves paraded. The judge, Mr. Cyril Clayton, stated that there was a definite improvement on last year’s calves. The champion calf was very young, but a good type. Improvement could be made, however, in handling. Results: • Champion Calf. Hapi Nepia. August-September Calves (8 entries). —R. Campbell, 1; R. Thompson, 1; I. Mataira, 3. October-November Calves (9 entries). —Hapi Nepia, I ; Paul Whaanga, 2; Tama Tangiora, 3: Jack Brown. 4. A feature of the native school club’s display was the flower, vegetable, cooking, and handcraft show, held in conjunction with the calf club. This was a wonderful display, which reflected great credit on the children and teachers. Among those present were Dr. Walter Schmid, Swiss Consul, and Mrs. Schmid, who were guests of the headmaster, Mr. A. Holland, and Mrs. Rolland. Dr. Schmid was much impressed with the display, and congratulated the children, who gave a haka of welcome to the guests of honour. The following judges took part:—Miss N. Martin, flower section; Mr. K. Whaanga, vegetable section; Mrs. T. Toroaiwhiti, cooking; Sister May Gardiner, natural history. NUHAKA PUBLIC SCHOOL Twenty-five calves were paraded before the judges, Messrs. Gordon Smith and James Small, at the public school. The calves, stated the judges, were exceptionally good and would do credit to any A. and P. Show in New Zealand. The champion calf was a beautiful beast, and would be hard to beat anywhere. Mr. Gordon Steele presented Nancy Mackay with a silver cup, donated by the Swift (N.Z.) Company, Limited, Wairoa, for the best pet lamb. Mr. Frank Young, representing the Nuhaka A. and P. KAITARATAHI At the annual school agriculturel show held in Kaitaratahi Mr. F. R. Bould, who judged the stock section, remarked on the high standard of the animals judged, particularly the calves, which, in most instances, showed good breeding, as well as the results of care. Mr. Bould also gave an instructive talk to the children on the good points of a calf. Mrs. E. Stone, who judged the flower section, gave some useful hints on decorating, remarking that this section showed much improvement on the display of former years. Mr. W. Armstrong, who judged the vegetable and flower garden plots in the absence of the agricultural inspector, Mr. Middleweek, commented on the good standard of. the gardens shown, and gave a short instructive talk to the pupils. Mr. A. White, on behalf of the school comthanked the judges. Morning tea was then served, after which the iniants school garden plots were inspected. Prize-winners were:—June-July Calves. E. White, 2. PUHA The pupils of the Puha School held their annual calf culb parade on Thursday. There were excellent entries in all classes and the animals were in fine order. The judge, Mr. F. R. Bould, congratulated the pupils on the fine show of calves, which were of excellent type and would take a prize in any show. Later in the afteinoon the children held horse events. the pupils acted as stewards, and Mesdames Orgias and C. G. Brown presented the prize ribbons. Mr. G. Brown, chairman of the school committee, thanked Mr. Bould and praised the children on the way they had worked to make the day an outstanding success. lea was served by ladies of the district.
