MARKET GARDENING LAND
“We have not much vegetableproducing land in New Zealand, and it should be preserved for market gardening for all time,” said Mr. D. Pritchard, of the Department of Agriculture, when giving evidence before the tribunal in Wellington inquiring into the high price of vegetables. The best areas were all on good alluvial land adjacent to rivers, though liable to flooding. He mentioned, however, that a market gardener cropping fully six acres in the Hutt Valley would need 20 acres in the Manawatu to get an equivalent return.
