CONTROL OF RAGWORT
ROUGH SALT EFFECTIVE WORK AT TE RE INGA An effective means of dealing with ragwort has been tried out at Te Reinga by using the sweepings from the salting room at the Wairoa freezing wbrks. This means of control was tried out first in the northern part of the Wairoa district, and on representations made by Mr. F. R. Bould, stock and noxious weeds inspector, Gisborne, the work was continued in the 'southern'part of the Gisborne district in the vicinity of Te Reinga.
Rough salt, the greater part of which' was secured from the sweepings of the salting room at the freezing ivorks, was scattered round the roots of the ragwort. Within a few days the roots began to wilt and after a fortnight most had rotted completely.. >Mr. ;Bouid states that with a once-over treatment, a CO per cent kill had been effaced. The treatment had been so successful that the demand for its use had outstripped the quantity of salt available from the freezing works, %nd other supplies had to be drawn on.
