UNITED LAYMEN
PROTESTANTS GATHER IMPROMPTU ADDRESS Members of the Gisborne Protestant Fellowship held a well-attended tea and impromptu social gathering at the Bon Accord prior to the annual meeting, which was held on Monday at the Baptist Church. Among those present were many newcomers who appreciated the facilities of the fellowship for promoting new and wider acquaintance, and the free and informal atmosphere of the gathering. Mr. A. W. Hall presided, and during the evening Mr. Alex Ansell, accompanied on the piano by Mr. Hambly, contributed enjoyable songs. Adjutant Reid, Salvation Army, a guest of the fellowship, gave an impromptu address on the success of a recent campaign undertaken on the West Coast, in which he had a part. The campaign had for its slogan “Coast for Christ,” and had the united support of the Protestant churches. The talk illustrated the service which laymen could ofi’er to the official representatives of their denominations in organising large-scale evangelical activities.
At the annual meeting later. Mr. Hall gave a review of the year’s activities, and referred to the difficulties resulting from so many of the fellowship’s members joining the forces. A number of constructive proposals to promote further the goodwill and co-operation of the churches were considered, and occasion was taken to point out the need for larger membership.
Officers elected were Messrs. A. W. Hall, chairman, W. Oakden and J. Barker, executive members, and N. T, Watson, hon. secretary.
