G.S.F.M. & M. Co. & Vesteys
Sir, —Some of my fellow shareholders wish me to attend Saturday’s meeting to voice a protest if the future of this district seems imperilled by further concessions to a world trust. It is true that I come of fighting stock, but 1 am old and want peace. Also, lam entirely ignorant of the facts. At a meeting my voice might not be heard; and very likely I should not hear the answers to my questions. So, I ask you to publish some of the questions in the minds of shareholders, producers, and the general public, hoping that the directors will fully explain the position and convince everybody that they are not acting arbitrarily or unwisely. (1) Is the transfer of a half-share in the freehold of the land to Vestey’s a new concession or not? (2) If new, why has not more publicity been given and full opportunity to shareholders—and the general public, who are equally interested —to discuss the matter in all its bearings? (3) If new, what is the consideration received? (4) If nothing new is granted, why is it necessary, after so many years of routine and successful work, to sign a fresh grant? (5) Is it not a fact that by agreement with the Harbour Board,' made later than the entry of Vestevs, certain most important rights were ” confirmed to the company as originally constituted? The main causes of this war, and a sure guarantee of future wax’s, are the determination of a few to get unfair privileges and the apathy of the many who let things slide. This district has a duty to watch closely Lire management of our leading industries. A - L - REES.
