NEW DEPARTURE

DISTRICT CARNIVAL GROUPED ZONES COMPETE THREE SERVICES NAMED Preliminary steps in the organisation of a district queen carnival with candidates representing the navy, the army and the air force respectively were taken at a meeting of the East Coast Provincial Patriotic Council’s Campaign Committee, held this week, when there were present representatives of county zones whose co-operation will have an important bearing on the success of the carnival. There were present Mr. H. E. Marriner, deputy-chairman, Mesdames W. A. Bowie and H. Hunter, Messrs. A. G. Hicks (Waiapu zone), C. J. Cox (Cook zone), H. Harris, B. S. Bree, A. H. Miller, A. H. Barwick, F. T. Robinson, R. W. Halbert, and W. C. Kohn, campaign secretary. After a discussion of the general objectives of patriotic effort, in the course of which the differentiation between general funds and rehabilitation was emphasised, it was recommended, on the motion of Mr. Robinson, seconded by Mr. Cox, that the Queen carnival be held early in the new year, commencing preferably on February 16. Choice of Candidates Made It was decided that three queen candidates, representing the three principal branches of His Majesty’s forces, should be nominated, and that they be allocated to respective groups of zones as under: No. 1 candidate (Navy), Uawa, Waiapu and Matakaoa zones; No 2 candidate (Army), Gisborne Borough zone; No. 3 candidate (Air Force), Waikohu and Cook zones. The committee agreed, after some discussion, that the East Coast from the Uawa County boundary northward be regarded as the exclusive territory of the Uawa, Waiapu and Matakaoa zones, but that the town and country zones should operate on reciprocal invasion permits for campaigning purposes. A ballot for the allocation of the candidates was held, and the representatives of the respective zones expressed themselves as well satisfied with the result. Arrangements were made for the distribution of information concerning’ the organisation of the carnival, so that zone committees may make an early start with the selection of candidates and the formation of area committees. Flag Day Effort

The campaign committee received a report from the social committee of the Returned Soldiers’ Association on the organisation of Friday’s flag-day effort. Messrs. Barwick and Miller stated that their committee’s preparations were fairly complete, and that the degree of success which might be expected would hinge upon the number of sellers available. A number of adult sellers had volunteered to date, and a group of High School students also had offered their co-operation in town selling. A suggestion which found general favour was that the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, should be asked to request business houses to fly their flags on Friday, in celebration of the outstanding campaign in Libya. The campaign secretary reported that flags had been distributed to country and Coast zone committees, and that full co-operation had been promised by these committees, though from the nature of their territories it might be necessary to extend their selling activities are three or four days, and returns would not be available until next week.

It was pointed out further by the secretary that at Tolaga Bay. the zone committee had arranged a Paddy’s Market for Saturday, and that the sale of flags there would be undertaken in connection with this effort.
