FIRST WOOL CHEQUES

GISBORNE PAYMENTS CLIP BEING RUSHED IN SECOND APPRAISEMENT To-day is prompt day for wool disposed of at the first appraise'ment of the season held in Gisborne, Tolaga Bay and Tokomaru Bay a fortnight ago, and £173,882 13s 2d is being paid out, less 5 per cent retention money. The payment was made on 9674 bales, a total in excess of expectations a day or two before the appraisement took place, and the average payment per bale is a shade under £lB for the three centres. The realisations in the three centres, together with the bales appraised, are given in the following table: —

The wool catalogued a fortnight ago is nearly as much as the 11,000 bales appraised by November 21, 1940, by which time two appraisements had been held. By December 9 last year the total had been raised to almost 24,000 bales, and on this basis about 12,000 bales should be available for the second appraisement for the present season due to commence on December 4. Next Week’s Prospects However, wool has been coming into the stores very well during the past fortnight, and the total available for display next week should be substantially greater than at the corresponding period last year. By then, approximately half of the district’s wool clip should have been appraised. Last season nearly 54,000 bales were catalogued, and it is expected that this season’s clip will be, at least, no smaller than that for 1940-41.

There has been a great deal of activity in the wool stores recently, particularly in the Gisborne centre, .where the sheepskin appraisement, which should have been held last week, was postponed until yesterday, leaving a congestion of skins in most of the stores in town. With the skins out of the way, however, work will proceed rapidly with the assembly and display of wool for next week’s valuations.
