“Gold” Mine at Trentham
Enterprising soldiers of a fatigue party at Trentham camp received an unexpected legacy recently from their predecessors of the Ist New Zealand Expeditionary Force. This was on the site of the old camp canteen, near the Army School area. The canteen was demolished some time ago, and recently a fatigue party was put on to clear up the section. One soldier then found a half-sovereign. The news travelled fast, and, with bayonets and other means of probing the ground, numerous seekers after buried treasure were soon on the job. Another half-sovereign was found, and this spurred the searchers on to greater efforts. This coin was, however, the end of the gold, and the next finds were of silver coins, mostly sixpences of the English minting of that period, and pennies. £
