99TH BIRTHDAY
Born near Silverdale, on November 23, 1842, Mr. Valentine Savage, Ponsonby, Auckland, will celebrate his ninety-ninth birthday on Sunday. As a youth Mr. Savage learned the boat-building trade in Auckland. He started business at Whakatane and later moved to Opotiki, building many boats at both towns. He did not retire until he was nearly 90. Mr. Savage lived at Opotiki through the troublous days of the Hauhau rising and had many exciting experiences. On his retirement he went to his property at Hawai, 18 miles from Opotiki, moving to Auckland seven years ago. He still enjoys fairly good health.
