UAWA COUNCIL

PERCENTAGE OF RATES HIGHEST IN PROVINCE i (Herald Correspondent.) ; At the latest meeting of the Uawa County Council Hie county clerk, Mr. If. L. Tempest, reported that in ;r ■ recent issue of the Local Authorities' 'Hand Book the percentage of rate 'collections made by the council was shown to be the highest of all counties .in the Auckland Province. The Minister of Transport, the Hon. ,R. Semple, advised that local authorities would be consulted before any alteration was made in regard to .heavy traffic license fees. The Cook County Council wrote asking for views on the suggestion to form ;l sub-association of the Counties' Association, and a counter .suggestion that the five counties on the Coast should hold an annual conference. A similar letter was received from the Waiapu County Council. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. Irving, the council agreed that the time was not opportune to consider forming a sub-association of the Counties’ Association or to hold an annual conference, which required a special trip. The committee reported that two tenders had been received for quarrying, crushing and carting 1000yds. of stone from Paramata quarry, and that Mr. A. W. Dover's tender had been accepted. The action of the committee was approved. The engineer was authorised to attend to the road at the Pakarae River. The question of installing at Huanui quarry a crusher hired from the Cook County Council was considered, and it was decided to hire it. Those present at the meeting were Messrs. J. McNeil, chairman, D. H. Hawkins, H. R. Irving, A. H. Reeves, C. E. Smith and P. T. Weeks.
