JOBS FOR WOMEN
SCOPE IN DAIRY FACTORIES A suggestion that the dairy industry should be overhauled with the object of engaging more women in the factories was made by Mr. A. M. Samuel, a member of the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board, in Auckland. Mr. Samuel said he was sure thousands of women would be willing to take up this work in order to release men for the forces. A witness representing the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited, said the company was already employing 10 women at its Mount Eden factory. There was a limit to the work women could do in dairy factories; they were not strong enough to do the heavier work. Witness added that he had been told by the placement office that it was very difficult to obtain men to work in dairy factories because of the hours and wages. A total of 4r, hours a week was worked and some men earned an average of £4 14s (id a week.
