WAR MAY BE FORCED
WARNING TO AMERICA MUST BEAT HITLERISM (Reed. Nov. 24. 10.30 a.m.l WASHINGTON, Nov. 23. “The American people are aware that at any moment war may be forced upon us,” said the Undersecretary of State, Mr. Sumner Welles, in an article in the official Department of Commerce magazine. “The nation must spare no sacrifice to achieve the final defeat of Hitlerism and all that the evil term implies. We have no doubt of ultimate victory.” Three of the most prominent isolationists assailed the Navy Department’s censorship policy in withholding the news of the sinking of Axis raiders by American warships. Senator Nye said: “If the country knew all we are doing, they would accept the sinkings of our own ships as the logical result of this Presidential war.”
