MINISTERIAL TOUR

THE HON. H. G. R. MASON RUATORIA FUNCTION SHORT TRIP TO COAST The Hon. H. G. R. Mason, Minister of Justice, passed through Gisborne yesterday en route to Ruatoria, where he was to carry out to-day the ceremonial opening of the new courthouse. He was accompanied by Mr. L. B Dallard, Under-Secretary of Justice. The erection of the courthouse followed a decision of the Government to establish a centre for court sittings at this thriving settlement, where much of the business of the Waiapu Valley is now centralised. Until a comparatively few years ago, Ruatoria was no more than its old name —the Crossroads—implied; and all the business of the Waiapu was done at Tuparoa and Port Awanui. The decline of these latter settlements coincided with the steady and rapid growth of Ruatoria, and led to the decision of the Government to concentrate the business of the court at the newly-risen centre. The new courthouse is a fairly commodious building, well-appointed and constituting a handsome addition to Ruatoria’s business section.
