DESERT AIR CHIEF

MARSHAL CONYNGHAM NOTED WELLINGTONIAN (Reed. Nov. 21, 9 a.m.) CAIRO, Nov. 20. A straight-talking youthful veteran of the Ist Ne%v Zealand Expeditionary Force to-day directs Britain’s air war in the Western Desert. He is Air Vice-Marshal Arthur Conyngham, C. 8., D. 5.0., M.C., D.F.C., A.F.C., who holds the post of air officer commanding this vital theatre. Vice-Marshal Conyngham came from Wellington and begin a distinguished service career with the New Zealand infantry as a member of the party which took Samoa in 1914. He then transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and has been with the Royal Air Force in Britain and the East ever since the Great War. Easily approachable, candid and sharpvvitted he has a likeable belief in hitting the enemy where it hurts most.
