£5 FOR CHRISTMAS

EXTRA REMITTANCE N.Z. FORCES OVERSEAS DISPATCH BY RELATIVES (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. An annoncement that the Government had agred to permit a Christmas remittance of an additional £5 in New Zealand currency to members of the armed forces serving overseas, was made last night by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash. In order to conserve sterling funds overseas, said Mr. Nash, it was necessary to restrict the sending of moneys to an individual soldier, sailor or airman to £3O in each year. The additional amount now authorised is for the purpose of enabling relatives, if they so desire, to make a speciai Christmas remittance this year. The moneys must be in hand for transmission not later than December 5, otherwise payment before Christmas will be extremely doubtful.

The Minister mentioned that one Christmas remittance only to each member of the armed forces was permissible, and that separate bank receipts for the sum to be remitted up to a maximum of £5 must be forwarded, in accordance with the usual procedure, to the transmitting agency, namely, the Director of Base Records, or Navy or Air Headquarters, Wellington. Bank receipts should be enfaced “Christmas remittance.”
