THREE TIMES GRADED

MAN-POWER APPEAL DECISION RESERVED First of all placed in medical Grade 4 al'an army volunteer, then in Grade 1 while preparing to go overseas, G. N. Giblin, farm hand, was eventually placed in Grade 2 on account of his eyesight. He is now employed by Mr. H. C. Newman, Waipaoa, who appealed before the Gisborne District ManPower Committee yesterday against durational service in New Zealand onbehalf of the reservist, who was the only one to help on the farm of 900 acres. Decision was reserved. Adjournments sine die were granted in appeals against Territorial training made by Mr. W. D. Lysnar on behalf of F. Martin, station manager, and G. Stevens, shepherd, whose cases, adjourned from April 17, were set down for review. A new application on behalf of N. E. Rivers was adjourned for one month. An appeal was made by the Poverty Bay Electric-Power Board on behalf of T. P. J. Stevens, power-house operator, against dujrptional service with the 10th Heavy Regiment. Mr. F. Malthewson, engineer for the board, said that there was no other job in New Zealand in which the reservist could help better at present than the one he was in, for the failure of power would paralyse industry in the district. He was a key man in the station. This statement was confirmed by the managing-secretary, Mr. R. P. Baigent, who said that there was a real danger of a power shortage next winter, and it was fair to assume that the board would be required to run its station a good deal more than in the past. The staff was at present at the minimum. The board had not made it a practice to appeal for single men, but in this case it was essential.— Decision was reserved for three months.

Employers In Camp

A sine die adjournment was granted in the case of Alan F. Rowley, who was appealed for from Territorial and home defence service by his employers, Messrs. J. Thomson and Sons. On behalf of the employers, Mr. K. A. Woodward said that one member of the firm was in Territorial camp for the duration and another member was due to leave, for overseas. Two members of the staff were in the military forces. If the reservist were to go into camp a member of the firm would have to apply for release .from the army. In granting the adjournment, the committee stipulated that the reservist should continue in the Emergency Precautions Services. The committee reserved its decision for three months in regard to an appeal on behalf of L. G. Richardson, an army volunteer, whose father, Mr. H. J. Richardson, Rakauroa, said lie and his son did all the work on the sheep station of 1720 acres. A further sine die adjournment was granted in the case of Alexander Macallan, whose widowed mother stated that the reservist, with a Maori, did all the work on-a property of 1500 acres. A provision was that he remained with the Home Guard. A sine die adjournment was granted to the appeal on behalf of E. A. M. Smith, clerk, an army volunteer, from collective training with the Territorials. The appeal was opposed by the Army Department. In support of the appeal, the district clerk for the Public Works Department, Mr. Leo Atterwell, said that the appeal was originally for cadre service, and the Public Works Department had no intimation of any alteration. The department also appealed against collective training. The staff has been depleted a great deal, and the department was short of trained men. In adjourning the appeal, the committee agreed to transfer the reservist to the Home Guard. The case of F. Gaukrodger, shepherd, was deferred for review in three months. The reservist was an army volunteer. His father, Mr. C. Gaukrodger, said that his son was now the only shepherd remaining or. the property ot 11,000 acres with 11,000 to 12,000 sheep and 1200 cattle. A further sine die adjournment was granted to K. Harris, carpenter, providing lie joined the Home Guard. Mr. F. R'. Ball presided over the sitting, with Messrs. J. E. Benson and A. T. Webber.
