AWAMATE SETTLER

MR. P. J. LISTER PASSES i (Herald Correspondent.) The death occurred on Thursday night of Mr. Peter James Lister, of Awamate, a well known farmer in the Wairoa and Gisborne districts, at the age of 55. Mr. Lister was born in Waipawa and spent 22 years at Waipuka station before going to Awamate, where he has been for the last 11 years. Mr. Lister drew the homestead section at Awamate when the block was subdivided. He leaves a widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Lister, five daughters, Mesdames Foster, Hansen and F. Cornforth and Misses Mary and Elaine Lister, and three sons, Messrs. Albert, who is overseas with the Armed Forces, Frank and Athol Lister. There are three sisters, Mrs. Paviour, Gisborne, Mrs. Cooper, Otoko, and Mrs. Stevenson, Ashburton. Mr. Lister was a brother of the late Mrs. F. J. Single, Wairoa. An inquest into the death of Mr. Lister was held in Wairoa yesterday afternoon before the coroner, Mr. V. E. Winter, J.P., who returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence. Dr. E. B. Jardinc told the court that a post-mortem examination revealed that death had been due to coronary disease of the arteries of the heart, aggravated by very early pneumonia. In reply to the coroner’s question as to whether a man could have the diseases mentioned and not realise their gravity, Dr. Jardine said that evidently Mr. Lister was a man who said little, but put up with a good deal of pain, and was obviously a hard worker. Evidence was also given by a son, Frank Phillip Lister.
