The Navv Department announced that the ‘United States destroyer Reuben James was torpedoed and sunk last night west of Iceland while on convoy duty. President Roosevelt, at his press conference, said the loss of the destroyer had not changed American policy nor affected the international situation from America’s point of view. . A spokesman in Berlin said that if the Reuben James was accompanying a convoy it was no wonder that she was torpedoed. “A convoy is a British affair,” he said. “Whoever participates in it becomes part of a British formation.” Mr. Caller, a member of the House of Representatives, introduced a resolution in the House requesting President Roosevelt to sever diplomatic relations with Germany.
