HATRED OF HITLER

STALIN’S SCORN HOPKINS IMPRESSED SOVIET NEEDS OUTLINED Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Nov. 1, 9 a.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 31. The lend-or-lease administrator, Mr, Harry L. Hopkins, writing in an American magazine, says that M. Stalin declared: “We Russians shall win the war. The battle line will remain west of Moscow. Russia will not fail. Russia is big and inexorable. The Russians are fighting for Russia. She will not again be enslaved. Once we trusted this man (Hitler).” Mr. Hopkins commented: “I hope I shall never be hated as Stalin hates Hitler,” and added: “M. Stalin does not want an army or navy. Russia wants to fight her war herself. Russia’s man-power reserves are huge, but M. Stalin has said frankly that Russia' needs tanks, planes, big guns, anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns, octane fuel, and huge quantities of barbed wire.” The New York Times says that fast-moving events in Russia have prompted the adoption by the Administration of a policy whereby combat planes and war materials are to be supplied to the Soviet, even at the expense of the United States Army, subject only to limitations of transportation. One possibility now is that the United Sfates might shorten the time for hurrying cargoes to Russia by sending existing material from Hawaii or the Philippines and replacing it by consignments from the mainland.
