MAHIA PIONEER DIES

MRS. K. B. CROMBIE EIGHTY DESCENDANTS A daughter of pioneer settlers on the Mahia Peninsula, Mrs. K. B. Crombie, who, herself, had lived 65 years at the Mahia and in the Nuhaka district, died in the early hours of this morning at the residence cf her daughter, Mrs. Agnes Boyd, 307 Clifford street, Gisborne. Mrs. Crombie had 80 living descendants.

The deceased was born at the Mahia and was the youngest, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William (Greening, early settlers on the peninsula. She had not enjoyed the best of health for the past 18 months, at the beginning of which time she suffered from a heart ailment. The deceased lived quietly at her home in Nuhaka, preferring to give her time to the guidance of her family rather than take more than passing interest in affairs of the district. There were 13 children in her family, the eldest daughter being the only child who did not survive the mother. When she died at the age of 31 she had been married for some years to Mr. S. Symes, and left a family of eight.

The 12 children remaining to mourn their loss, together with- Mr. Crombie, are Mr. David Crombie, Otaki, Mr. Edward Crombie, Eltham, Mr. Paul Crombie, Port Ahuriri, Messrs Charles and Jack Crombie, Nuhaka, Mr. Joe Crombie, Waipukurau, Mrs. D. J. Bower, Kaikohe, Mrs. Agnes Boyd, Gisborne, Mesaames S. W. Harrison and J. T. Begley, Nuhaka, Mrs. E. Tucker, Gisborne, and Mrs. A.i G. Borh.am, Wairoa. There were 60 grandchildren, and eight great-grand-children.

The interment took place to-day at the Taruheru cemetery.
