WOMEN IN THE 8.8. C.

NEW OPENINGS AVAILABLE JOBS AS OPERATORS LONDON, Oct. 7. To the new openings now available for women, an interesting addition has recently been made, when the British Broadcasting Corporation decided to employ them as operators in control rooms and recording centres. While the work which they will have to do is not spectacular, it provides opportunities for intelligent women with artistic sense and some technical knowledge and skill to play an important part in the war effort. At present they are being recruited in three categories—for control room work at studio centres, as recording operators, and for switching and monitoring work at high-power transmitting stations. The work of recording operator calls for a fairly high degree of technical- skill. Here the women handle the Various types of recording systems and are taught the best standards of reproduction; so that they can recognise the cause of a bad recording when on ; control and log it accordingly. The 8.8. C. has set up its own training school and the first women chosen are now working. The age limits at present are 21 to 35, and while the scheme is in the nature of a wartime experiment it is up to the students themselves to prove their worth. If they make good they will probably continue to play an important part in the technical operation of the broadcasting service.
