SALVATION ARMY
BAND’S SUCCESSFUL YEAR To mark the conclusion of a successful year and an excellent series of meetings arranged by the Gisborne Citadel Band, a band tea was held in the Gisborne Salvation Citadel recently, over 300 people sitting down to the meal, which had been splefididly arranged by a large number of women. The Mayor, Mr. N. 11. Bull, accompanied by the Mayoress, presided and they were supported by Major and Mrs.. Mahaffie, of the Salvation Army in Hastings. The town clerk, Mr. W. M. Jenkins, and Mrs. Jenkins also were present. Mr. Bull spoke in glowing terms of the work of the Salvation Army Band and assured its members of his continued support. Owing to Parliamentary duties, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M. P., was unable to be present, but a telegram of congratulation and goodwill was sent by him and read to the meeting. A number of items were played by the band during the evening while other items were a solo by Mi's. J. S. Rutherford, a monologue and an elocutionary item by Mr. Norman Lee, a cornet solo with band accompaniment by Master Mahaffie, Hastings, a violin duet by Messrs. J. Prentice and J. S. Rutherford, and a three-part choral song by the women songsters. The accompanist was Mrs. E. Lentell. On Sunday services were conducted in the Citadel by Major and Mrs. Mahaffie, the Citadel being full for every service. On Sunday morning the W.E.C.M.R. Band paraded and on Sunday afternoon united with the Salvation Army Band in giving an excellent musical programme. During the meeting Adjutant H. Manse Read commissioned the local officers of the Gisborne corps. A vocal solo was contributed by Mr. J. Waugh. At the conclusion of these special services helpers were thanked by Adjutant Read, the bandmaster, Mr. D. Waugh, and the band secretary, Mr. H. Cutts.
