President Roosevelt is reported to have told Congressional leaders in Washington that Russia is the key to the immediate situation in Europe. He | raised the hope that the Soviet could i hold out indefinitely against the Nazi | military machine. The Washington correspondent of \ the New Yoriv Tunes says rvir. ktOoc- j velt asked Congressmen to encourage i their colleagues not to become alarm-! ed too early at the German progress ] on the eastern iront. r-ie saict die I Russian resistance had probably at- ! ready precluded an attempt by Ger-1 many to invade Britain this year and he appeared to endorse the British view that a decisive defeat of Germany would necessitate an invasion of the continent by Britain and her Aliies. The London Evening Standard says: “The Russians have lost none of their skill in meeting the biitzkreig, but they have to lace a Hitler and his gang fighting for their lives. If Brittam cannot launch a major invasion to divert some of the German forces other means must be discovered of assisting our alb". They must have all the supplies we can give them. “Soviet Russia must never go down. All of our own prospects are governed by her endurance. Her performance has saved us from the immediate horror of invasion, just as surely as the diversion of bombers against Moscow has saved countless of families in London.’’
