SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED iHerald Correspondent.) The Makaraka - Matawhero Hall proved a popular rendezvous for dancers last night, when a dance was held to entertain soldiers on leave. There was a largo attendance, including members of the army, navy and air force. The chief guests of the evening were Privates D. Millicr, J. Moore, T. Langford and C. Platt. The music for dancing was played by Miss Lena Ruru’s orchestra, while extras were contributed by Mrs. Ashdown. The chairman of the patriotic committee made a presentation to the Makaraka soldiers on leave and wished them the best of luck. Private T, Langford briefly responded. The excellent supper arrangements were in the hands of a capable committee comprising Mesdarnes W. Jonasen, J. Parker. H. Lange, G. Ashdown, V/. Livingston, A. Lange, E. Moore, D. Wcastall, W. Dailey, and Misses fleas!ip and J. Brooking.

The weekly card evening controlled by the Makaraka branch of the Labour Party proved popular. Winners of the five-hundred games were. —Ladies: Mrs. Bishop. Gentlemen: Mr. C. Reidy. The winner of a mystery prize was Mrs. I-lear,lip. A dainty supper, served by the ladies, concluded a pleasant veiling. Private and Mrs. D. Millicr are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Millier, Bushmere.—Private and Mrs. G. Spratt are visiting the district. —Private J. Moore is spending his leave with parents at Bushmere.
