CHEMICAL IN SAUSAGES
Charges under the Food and Drugs Act were preferred against two butchers before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in Auckland. R. and W. Hellaby, Limited, admitted the presence in sausage meat of 4.6 grains of sulphur dioxide instead of the legal amount of 3.5 grains. A representative of the firm said a careful check was kept on samples and the increased content was due to an employee’s carelessness. A fine of 40s was imposed. James Higginson, butcher, admitted a charge that a sample of sausage meat had a content of 7.5 grains of sulphur dioxide. He was fined 40s.
