TERRITORIAL CALLS FARMERS’ OBLIGATIONS MAN-POWER HEARINGS The difficulties found by farmers in keeping labour of suitable types was again demonstrated at the meeting of the Gisborne District Man-Power Committee yesterday afternoon, when a number of appeals for postponements of Territorial service were heard. The committee. Messrs. F. K. Ball., chairman. -J. E. Benson and C. E. Bickford, was able to give relief hi a majority of the cases dealt with, but in eacli instance it was indicated that the appellants must recognise the need for the completion of training by all young men of the. required physical standard as soon as possible. J. G. Will, mail contractor, Waikohu (Mr. G. I. Parker), appealed on his own account. The appellant stated that since his name appeared in the ballot his father had died, and his mother required his help in running the family farm. His only brother was in camp, and seemed likely to remain permanently. —The appeal was adjourned sine die. Harry Nicol, carrier, was appealed for by T. C. Nicol and Sons against the obligations of out-of-camp training under the Territorial scheme. He attended camp at Wajouru for three months, but heid that his business vvould suffer if he was obliged to carry on home training, comprising weekend parades. Ife offered to do the whole of the year's training in a continuous period, if it could be arranged. —The appeal was dismissed. One of the five was to be transferred to Piikelorc station lo help through the busy season, and the employer asked for an adjournment until February 28. — : The adjournment was granted, the appeal being dismissed subject to the reservist not being called up before February 28, 1942. To Serve in March A. F. Jacobs was appealed for : by Mr.. W. McN. Livingstone, his employer. The appellant stated that Jacobs helped, neighbouring farmers, who all worked, ,in together to get their docking arid other heavy jobs done. The appellant had one son in the overseas forces arid one at school. The appeal was, dismissed, subject to the reservist not being called on before February 28, 1942. J. E. Morrissgy was appealed for, by the Waiapu County Council,, on whose behalf it was stated that 'Morrissey was essential for the road-construc-tion work, being ,in charge of a grading machine. The. council stated it would not appeal. against overseas service, Morrissey being a .volunteer for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. —The appeal was dismissed, the reservist not to be called before October 31, 1941. The case of a reservist, .W. J. Owen,. , for whom the , committee recommended immediate leave for three, months from , his unit, Guards of. Vital Points,. Miramar, was brought before the committee,, it was reported that the, recommendation, had not been given effect to, and a direction was given that a' telegram be sent to the Director of National Service, stating that if the matter was not given , attention at once the committee would take lip the matter with the Minister.
