SINGAPORE'S STRENGTH

REPORTS BORNE OUT "The Singapore base is just as strong as you hear,” said Mr. John W. Jackson, a member of the Singapore Harbour Board, who arrived at Auckland by the California Clipper. Mr. Jackson is returning to Singapore after a business trip to England. He added that he had been away from Singapore -ince February, and the base was now far stronger than when he left. Mr. Jackson experienced several bombings during his stay of two months in England, and was full of admiration for the British people. He had had several scares during the voyage across the Atlantic, but here again the calm courage of the passengers had been an inspiration. “In spite of what I heard before I reached the country, there is plenty of food in England,” said Mr. Jackson. “1 travelled for several days without ration cards on trains and in hotels. The choice of food certainly was limited, but there was ample. For instance, you could have bacon and eggs or sausages and eggs for breakfast, but you could not have bacon and eggs and sausages.”
