Girls In Demand
“If lfiO girls lined up outside my office I could find jobs for all of them by 9 o’clock in the morning," said the district placement officer in Dunedin, Mr. T. A. White, when discussing the labour market. “Skilled or inexperienced girls are wanted in all types of industries, but unfortunately there is too much employment offering, with the result that girls have become extremely independent. To most of my recent appeals I have not had one reply.” Mr. White said the woollen industry had many opportunities for girls and in order to attract employees one South Otago company had built a hostel to accommodate its workers.
