SOLDIERS ON LEAVE (Herald Correspondent. ) A very bright atmosphere prevaile. at a dance held in the Motu Hal] c. Saturday in honour of soldiers o: leave. There was an excellent a-, tendance, including a number of vis. tors from Matawai. Miss Una Rest was at the piano and Mr. S. Pearc. Opotiki, assisted in several number; playing his violin. Mrs. C. White head and Miss J. Jackson playc-i extras' and Mr, W. J. Reed was at excellent M.C. A euchre tournamcn was held, tiie winners being Mrs. (. Whitehead and Mr. A. Cribben, othe prizes going to Mrs. A. E. Gibson anc. Mr. D. Richardson. During an interval presentation; were made to the soldiers, Corporal J. Thessman, Lance-Corporals L. Castles and T. Scholium, and Privates J. Ruru and P. Te Taite. Speaking on behalf of the Matawai Women’s Institute and Sports Club, Mrs. A. E. Gibson presented each soldier with a money belt and wished him. luck. Mr. G. O. Donovan spoke on behalf ol the public and the Matawai-Motu R.S.A., and presented each man with a wallet and a pencil. Lance-Corporal Castles replied on behalf of the guests of honour. Miss Una Reed lias left on a visi to Palmerston North. —Misses D. Anderson and J. Dick. Opotiki, were visitors to Motu last week-end. —Mis; D. Castles is the guest of her sister. Mrs. J. Bartie, Waitangirua station.— Lance-Corporals T. Scholium and L Castles are visiting friends in Motu. — Pte. J. Fraser was a visitor to Motuhora last week-end. —Mr. and Mrs. T Scholium. Kaitaratahi, were visiter.. to Motu for the soldiers’ farewell dance on Saturday night.—Mrs. H. A. Neilson, 'Gisborne, was' the week-end guest of her. parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Reed.—Mr. L. Martin, Gisborne was the week-end guest of Mr. and Mrs. G. Maunder, Motu.
