JAPANESE REFUSAL
PERMIT TO U,S. SHIP CALL FOR NATIONALS (Reed. Ausr. 18. 9 a.m.)WASHINGTON, Aug. 17. The State Department announced that Japan has refused permission for the American liner President Coolidge to visit a Japanese port to embark 100 American civilians who desire to be repatriated, many of whom have already sold up their belongings, left their employment, and are virtually stranded. The United Press describes the Japanese action as keeping the Americans as virtual hostages.
