NEARLY 1000 ENTRIES
COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL STEADY IMPROVEMENT A further increase in the number of entries received for the Gisborne Competitions festival this year reflects the steady improvement in interest since the society’s reorganisation three years ago. Entries for the festival, which wiil commence on Monday, August 25, total 969, which is more than 50 per cent greater than the number for 1938. The increase in the figures since that date are indicated in the following totals:—l93B, 610; 1939, 798; 1940, 818; 1941, 969. More competitors from outside districts are listed than in any previous festival, and the adults’ classes particularly have received greater support, up to 20 entries coming forward in a vocal class. Vocal items total 50 more than last year, with 20 more in the pianoforte section and an increase of 84 in the elocution. A perusal of the programme, now on sale, indicates that the week will be a very full one, commencing at 9 a.m. on the opening day, and an effort has been made to balance the presentation of the numbers more suitably than in the past. The box plan for subscribing members opens on Tuesday at Messrs. Tattersall and Bayly’s and on the following day for non-members.
