NEW QUARTERS
TEMPORARY CHANGE ARMY OFFICE CiTY HALL CHANGE-OVER As from Monday, the business of the Army Department in Gisborne will be directed from the City Hall, which the department has taken over for its general purposes pending the construction of Gisborne’s new drill hall. The Abercorn Hall, which for some years has accommodated the business and staff of the department in steadily increasing discomfort—owing to the great developments of military work in the district—will continue to be used as the headquarters of Territorial and home-defence units, and as a store for certain military requirements. It is hoped that when the new drill hall is constructed, all departments of military activity will be housed under the one roof. The City Hall will provide quarters for the sub-area officer and his clerical staff; for the care of sick and wounded soldiers’ affairs, and for medical boards, as well as for the assembly of drafts proceeding to camp. All drafts from Gisborne will leave from this depot after the change-over is complete. One consequence of the assumption of control of the building by the Army Department is that the Savage Club will have to find a new home for the time being. Other social organisations which have used the City Hall in the past will be under the same difficulty. As far as possible, however, the hall will be kept in its present condition.
