CHUNGKING BOMBINGS
STOICISM OF THE PEOPLE “The bombing season in Chungking is now just as regular as the rainy season and the Chinese take about as much notice,” said Mr. James Perkins, Far Eastern manager for Paramount Pictures, who- arrived at Auckland by the California Clipper. “During five months of the year the Japanese almost pulverise the city with bombings,” said Mr. Perkins. “When the fogs become too heavy the bombings cease, and the Chinese methodically set to and build the city again. Theatres are established and. although not very substantial, they seat about 1000 people. For seven months of the year pictures are screened, and then operations cease during the bombing season. It is really remarkable.
