SPEECH COMPETITION

WAIROA HIGH SCHOOL (Herald Correspondent.) Before a large audience of parents and friends on Thursday night, the secondary department of the Wairoa District High School held its first speech competition. The subject was: "The Life-work of Some Famous Man or Woman." Eight speakers faced the judge, the Yen. Archdeacon Butterfield, who placed the winning competitors in the following order: —L. M., J. Loader. 1: G. J. Sutherland and Joyce Marshall, equal, 2. Loader's choice was Mr. Winston Churchill, while Sutherland chose Otto von Bismarck, and Joyce Marshall Josef Stalin. Other speakers were Alison Shaw (Winston Churchill), Cecily Cook (M. J. Savage). Jean Archibald (Robert Burns), Patricia Shortt (Shakespeare) and Brenda Yates (Van Gogh). During the evening the school choir sang Psalm 23 and “Deep in fehe Forest,’’ "Fair Daffodils,” and "O Peaceful Night.” A one-act play, Clemence Dane’s “Shivering Shocks," was performed bv R. Crarer, B. Heywoori, I. Dickie, M. Fraser, I. Wishart, and A. Smith.
