VICHY BREACHES
SYRIAN ARMISTICE RECRUITING BARRIER FREE FRENCH FORCES (Elec. Tel Copyright—United Press Aflsn.) (Reed. Aug. 15. 3 p.m.) CAIRO, Aug. 14. General Sir Henry Maitland Wilson has vigorously protested against three breaches of the Syrian armistice convention. He states that, firstly, General Dentz denounced as deserters French soldiei's who elected to join the Free French; secondly, the Vichy authorities summarily removed to an embarkation port the families and the baggage of many awaiting a chance to join General de Gaulle; thirdly, the Vichy authorities sold a considerable quantity of war materials to civilians alter the convention had been signed. These breaches are distinct from the bad faith for which General Dentz was detained. There ave also numerous instances of obstruction. Gendarmes arrested 50 Vichy soldiers in Tripoli who intended to join the Allies. The Allies were compelled to arrest the gendarmes and liberate the soldiers.
