SCHOOL MATCHES

OLD STUDENTS DEFEATED RUGBY AND BASKETBALL The Gisborne High School A Rugby team yesterday afternoon had their third win in as many weeks against heavy opposition in the form of a team composed of old students of the school. The match, an annual challenge one was won by the school team by 16 points to 11. High School did not show their usual combination and speed in the first half when the old students made most of their points. I). A. Wells opened the scoring with a penalty kick, which was soon followed by a try by A. J. C. Webster, which Wells converted. By this time some of the old students wild had not been playing Rugby for some years were beginning to tire, hut the School players were still making desperate efforts to get through. During the interval the old students appeared to regain some of their energy, and Webster. made a splendid run immediately after the kick-off, scoring his second try of the afternoon for the old students. Things looked rather black for School with the score at 1 1-nil, but soon after J. Martin made a splendid run downfield, and just before he was tackled, passed the ball to Gibson, who scored the try. ’ School made another rush down the wing which ended in a mix up and a penalty goal was taken by S. Wills for School. R. Bull was the next School scorer, his try being converted by VVills, making the score 11—all. A few minutes before time Bull was instrumental in scoring another try after making a dash tiirough the old students' lines. He passed to Turnbull, who crossed the line hut failed to touch down and was tackled, the hall anally being fallen on by Thompson, the School winger. Wills converted the try, the final score being High School 16, H. 5.0.8. 11. Mr. R. S. Stacey was the referee. School’s Basketball Win A team of High School old girls were also unsuccessful in their challenge basketball game against the High School team. The combination of the school team proved too good for the old girls, whose team was only a scratch one. High School showed they were better in all thirds against their opponents, but had to fight hard to get their 22 goals against the 10 scored by the old students. Miss N. Hayes refereed the match.
