“PATENT ABSURDITY”
AMERICAN’S ALLEGATION BRITISH PEACE PLEA (Reed. Aug. 14, noon) WASHINGTON, Aug. 13. The Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull, was asked at a press conference concerning a statement made to the press by Mr. Shafer, a member of the House of Representatives, who alleged that Lord Beaverbrook had declared recently that unless the United States got troops into the war within a month Britain would have to sue for peace. Mr. Shafer declined to disclose the source of this allegation or to elaborate his statement. Mr. Hull said he did not feel called upon to speak for Lord Beaverbrook, especially on something which was a patent absurdity on its face.
