INSULT TO FLAG
STRONGLY RESENTED REMARKS BY M.P. V SALUTING CEREMONY (Per Prenß Aoaoriation.) WELLINGTON, this day. Reference to a recent discussion in Parliament on saluting the flag was made during a meeting of the Dominion executive committee of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association and the following resolution was adopted unanimously:— “That the Dominion executive committee of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association strongly resent the remarks of Mr. Ciyde Carr, M.P., in the House of Representatives on August 8, as reported in the press as follows: ‘I know some people are dependent on ritual observances and that people with fairly primitive minds want to salute the flag and go through some mumbo jumbo. Teachers are people who have read widely and studied deeply, and have got away from kindergarten methods of thinking and acting, and it is pretty hard to expect them to bow down before a totem pole.’ “If Mr. Carr is correctly reported the Dominion executive committee regards his words as a direct insult to the flag itself and to all those who salute it proudly and reverently on proper occasions.”
“It was decided that copies of the resolution be sent to the acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. W. Nash, and to Mr. Carr.
