NOVEL PIG HUNT

SOWS AND ARROWS USED To hunt wild game with bows and arrows was the novel experience of three archery enthusiasts in the hills behind Hampden, Otago, recently, when they succeeded in killing two wild pigs, which ax - e claimed to be the first to be shot with bow and arrow in Australia or New Zealand. They said it was thrilling sport, but handling the bow was a much more difficult problem in bush and hilly country than shooting wild pigs with a rifle. The archers were Messrs. I. MCVinnie and L. Rutherford, Oamaru, and Mr. E. Strang, Dunedin. They had dogs to bail up the pigs and used bows with a drawing pressure of 601 b. and steel broadhead arrows keenly sharpened. In every case, from a distance of 15 to 20yds, the arrows went clean through the quarry. Another hunter had shot an “oldman” boar with a shield on his shoulders an inch and a-half thick. As a test an arrow was directed at the shoulder, the missile penetrating the shield and shoulder-blade and entering the chest cavity.
