An engagement is announced between James Donald Dorrington, only son of Mr. and Mrs. John Mackay, Tauranga, and Betty Beamish, only daughter of Mrs. Athol G. Beamish White, Gisborne. Mr. T. R. England has returned to Wairoa from Gisborne. Leading Aircraftman M. O’Malley left Wairoa on Sunday after a short visit to his home town. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Duley, old residents of Nuhaka, celebrated • their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary on Sunday. Mr. G. W. C. Drake, vocational guidance officer for the Auckland district, of which Wairoa is considered a part, will visit Wairoa on Friday in the course of a tour o 1 the East Coast. His object is to meet pupils in all types of schools and to address parents and others. —Special Constable S. Tucker left Wairoa yesterday on transfer to Whitianga. Mercury Bay. During the week-end he was met by Wairoa friends and presented by Mr. J. E. Svensen, of the Clyde Hotel, with a travelling rug, a case of pipes and a tobacco pouch. Constable Tucker also was met by his colleagues of the police and the Wairoa Court staff and presented with a fountain pen and a handbag for Mrs. Tucker.—Special. Corporal Seddon H. W. Hill, New Zealand Expeditionary Force, who was reported on Saturday to be wounded and a prisoner of war, enlisted from Gisborne and spent most of his life prior to the war in this district. He was an employee of Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Company’s Gisborne branch, and took a prominent part in repertory productions and in sport. His mother resides in New Plymouth.
